TMJ Disorders and Headaches

One of the most common symptoms of TMJ dysfunction is headaches. TMJ headaches normally occur in the morning. If you suffer from TMJ dysfunctions, you may clench grind your teeth while you sleep, which can cause a headache.

The Symptoms of a TMJ Headache

A TMJ can affect many different parts of the body. You may experience pain at the back of your head or in your temples. Headaches often occur in the morning. Migraine headaches can also be caused by TMJ. You may experience pain in  your upper back, shoulders and neck. Teeth clenching and teeth grinding are another symptoms of TMJ.

Therapy Options

When you visit our office, the dentists will evaluate your bite as well as your TMJ function. Depending on what we find and whether you are exhibiting any symptoms or have any concerns, we may order additional tests or offer treatment solutions. These treatments may include oral appliance therapies to correct your bite, such as orthodontic treatment or occlusal adjustments.

This is a sleep appliance that is often used to treat patients suffering from frequent headaches.

Bite Correction

Our dentists may recommend procedures to correct your bite. These procedures help realign the upper and lower teeth so they come into contact with one another correctly. This may include orthodontics, tooth equilibration and crowns and bridges.
